MacBook Keyboard Not Working? This fix has worked for millions!

macbook keyboard not working 1 740x414 1

So recently my MacBook started having issues –nearly three years after. It happened when I was doing important work. So I started searching “MacBook keyboard not working” and other queries hoping to find a way to fix(just like you are) and saw a youtube video that had millions of likes and heart-melting comments. That solution made my day.

Do note that if this solution doesn’t work for you, chances are you are using MacBook that comes with the butterfly keyboard. As the name suggests, it’s just as delicate as a butterfly. In fact, grain could be disrupting your space bar or other keys to function improperly. But before taking your MacBook to the Apple support I recommend you try these methods below:

If you haven’t tried this fix yet, you may be very close to making your keyboard start working again. Also, some other solutions have helped others.

Reset PRAM

This is the solution that worked for me and helps whenever my MacBook keyboard is not working.

  • Shut down your Computer
  • Press the Power button, and instantly hold ⌘ + Option + P + R until you hear the Mac startup sound.
  • Mac will restart again and your Mac Keyboard will start working again.

If this didn’t solve your issue, don’t worry there are more options:

Reset Your SMC

The SMC is a chip found on intel based MacBooks. It is responsible for an array of small MacBook functions including keyboard back lightning, among many. Most of the times resetting the SMC solves MacBook issues.

Resetting the SMC depends upon which MacBook you have:

MacBook with a Non-Removable Battery

  • Plugin your MagSafe adapter
  • Shut down your MacBook
  • Press and hold down: Shift, Control, Option, and the power button
  • If your MagSafe adapter changes colour, you’ve reset the SMC

MacBook with a Removable Battery:

  • Shut down the laptop
  • Remove your battery and MagSafe adapter
  • Hold the power button for 10 seconds.

Disable FileVault

  • Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
  • Click the FileVault tab.
  • Click the lock icon on the bottom left, then enter an administrator name and password.
  • Click Turn Off FileVault.

Upgrade macOS

Often times the issue resides in your mac operating system and Apple provides fixes for bugs in next updates. So, make sure your macOS is up to date.

To update;

  • Go to System Preferences > Software Update.
  • It’ll automatically start looking for updates. Just click Update now if it finds any.

Delete Recent App

Though rare, but if your MacBook keyboard is not working after a recent app installation, the app could be the culprit behind your keyboard malfunction. If your keyboard does start working after deleting the app, and the app is important to you, ensure the app is updated. Also, consult the support section of the app and deliver your keyboard issues. Chances are you’ll get the solution.

Conclusion

Hope these solutions help you out. Just in case you are still having trouble with your keyboard, try this: use a can of compressed air and blow out any debris that might be interfering. If all fails, Apple support is the way to go.
