Why are there Blue, Green, and Orange Dots on iPhone screen?


Apple value users by giving them full authority over their device’s privacy. The Multi coloured dots on iPhone screen also represent one of iPhone’s privacy features. It lets iPhone users beware if some change has happened or is happening on their devices with or without the user’s consent. 

So here are some colourful dots and their meaning:

Blue Dots Next to an App

This is an old one. The blue dot on iPhone screen, next to an app, suggests that your App has updated and has new features. If you are unsure why the blue dot came in the first place. It’s because you have auto-updates enabled on your iPhone. If you want to prevent automatic updates on your iPhone, follow this:

If you don’t want your apps to update automatically here’s what you should do:

1. Head to Settings.

2. Tap on AppStore.

3. Toggle off the App Updates option next to your app.

How to Remove Blue Dots from iPhone?

If you don’t want the app to show a blue dot next to your app. All you can do is open the app, and the blue dot will disappear. However, it will reappear when the app updates again.

Simply, drag up from the bottom of the screen to open the control centre and you will see the app using your microphone next to a microphone icon.

The green dots functions the same as the orange dot. But, instead of showing that your microphone is in use, the green dots represent that your Camera is active. Again, if you not performing an activity that uses a camera like video calls, or taking a snap etc. You should open up the control centre and it’ll show the app using your camera next to the camera icon.

Just close any app that is using the camera and the dot will disappear. In case the green dot is still there, you may need to investigate the issue.

How to Restrict which App can Use your Microphone and Camera?

If you know apps that don’t need a Microphone/Camera to work, you can disable them. Simply follow the steps below:

1. Goto Settings.

2. Tap on Privacy

3. Tap on the Microphone / Camera.

4. Deselect the app that doesn’t need it to function. 


The dots are excellent privacy features introduced by Apple that keeps you aware and empowers you to allow/disallow which apps have access to your mic and camera. “Much like when a webcam is on, the new orange or green dot is a frequent and visual reminder as to what apps might be watching or listening to you which can help protect us,” says Jake Moore, a cybersecurity specialist at ESET.
