Your iPhone model can be seen next to “Model Name, and the current iOS version next to “Software Version.”
Here’s the list of all the Apple Watches released before August 2022 and which iPhone model and iOS version they are compatible with:
- 1st Generation Apple Watch: iPhone 5 or newer, iOS 8.2 or newer installed.
- Apple Watch Series 1: iPhone 5 or newer, with at least iOS 11 installed.
- Apple Watch Series 2: iPhone 5 or newer, with at least iOS 11 installed.
- Apple Watch Series 3: iPhone 6s or newer, running at least iOS 14. Some older, used models may be compatible with iPhone 6 and older iOS versions, but that’s not certain.
- Apple Watch Series 4: iPhone 6 or newer with iOS 12 or newer.
- Apple Watch Series 5: iPhone 6s or newer with iOS 13 or newer.
- Apple Watch Series 6: iPhone 6s or newer, running iOS 14 or newer.
- Apple Watch Series SE: Phone 6s or newer, running iOS 14 or newer.
- Apple Watch Series 7: iPhone 6s or later with iOS 15 or later.
How to connect Apple Watch to your iPhone
You first must unpair your watch from its current device if it’s already paired. So go ahead and open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, and then tap General. Next, wipe Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings.
Once your watch is reset, you can pair it with your new iPhone.
- Turn on your Apple Watch and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
- Bring your iPhone near your Apple Watch, wait for the watch pairing screen to appear on your iPhone, and then tap on Continue.

- Follow the first 4 steps from the previous section. Instead of aligning the animation on the watch in the frame on the iPhone, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually.
- Tap the i on the watch.
- On the iPhone, tap the name of the watch displayed on the watch.
- On the iPhone, enter the 6-digit code displayed on the watch.
- The Apple Watch and iPhone are now paired, and you can complete the setup.
