How to Factory Reset Mac or MacBook in 2022?

Are you selling your MacBook or just want to know how to factory reset your Mac? You are at the right place. Whether you are on an Apple silicon or an Intel-based Mac, this article will explain it all to you.

If you are running macOS Monterey on a Mac with Apple silicon, follow the first method. For any other Mac or macOS follow the second one.

Note: Please be advised to not use the second method on the newer macs as it may malfunction your Mac.

Before you begin, make sure you have backed up your mac with time machine or any other backup option such as using an external drive.

So let’s begin

1. How to Factory Reset Mac (2018 or Newer)

Firstly make sure you are on the latest macOS Monetary.

To confirm:

  1. Click on the Apple logo on the top left.
  2. Then click on About This Mac.

If it shows macOS Monterey, then leave it. If not, then update it.

Once you get your mac to macOS Monterey,

  1. Click on the Apple logo again.
  2. Click on System Preferences.

3. Then click System Preferences again in the menu bar.

4. Select Erase All Content And Settings.

The next window will show what the erasing of data will do.

5. Click on Continue, and all your windows will close.

6. Enter your Apple Id password

7. Finally, click on Erase All Content and Settings button, and that’s it

After the last step, your Mac will restart, and voila! Your mac is good as new.

2. How to Factory Reset Mac (2017 or Earlier)

  1. Restart your Mac, then press and hold the Command + R key.
  2. In the Recovery screen, click on Disk Utility.
  1. Now select Macintosh HD – Data
  2. Click on the Erase button.
  3. Click Erase. However, if you see an Erase Volume Group button, click that button instead.
  1. Once it’s done, click Disk Utility in the menu bar and select Quit Disk Utility.
  2. Now click on Reinstall macOS and go through the process.

After you are done with it, your Mac will greet you with a welcome screen.
