On September 10, 2018 the Black Blockchain summit organized by Bitmari and Bithub Africa aptly held at the prestigious Howard University, a historically black university (HBCU) in Washington, D.C. The event witnessed a considerable turn out by several blockchain experts, entrepreneurs, advocates and enthusiasts particularly from afrodescental communities. As notable leaders in the education and adoption of blockchain technology in the emerging economy, KuBitX expectedly marked her presence at the event. Our Cofounder and COO, Victor Akoma-Philips was a panellist alongside 4 other blockchain entrepreneurs discussing a number of topical issues centring around blockchain as an instrument for decolonization and liberation that will enable Africa build her own future. The important role of African communities in blockchain development was emphasized throughout the event. With statistics revealing that the black economy accounts for a staggering 1.7 billion people and out of 10 youths, 7 will be born in Africa, indeed Africa can be said to be the future of humanity.
Using MTN Africa as a case study, Victor Akoma-Philips of KuBitX (formerly worked with MTN) spoke at length about the challenges influencing company growth in Africa, namely regulatory bodies’ attempts to ruin development by implementing stifling policies and how he was able to circumvent these roadblocks and execute different successful product campaigns. Victor also shared anecdotes of how he replicated similar successes with Dell, and how his hot streak of success led him to the realization that ‘results do not lie’ and that ‘people matter not the system’. With that he set off to follow his dreams of increasing blockchain awareness which culminated in the birth of KuBitX Exchange. KuBitX is fortunate to have experienced and dedicated management team members like this in our fold.
Other topics discussed by the panel include – leveraging value and the interconnectivity of money, an idea that serves to remind all that ‘if you produce a good product it doesn’t matter what the colour of the buyer is.’ Focus should therefore be on the product and service; the metrics will take care of themselves.
But the event was far from over. It was now time for a lively interaction with the audience. On the discussion about improving use cases, Victor emphasized the need for respectful collaboration and the need for asset backed use case. Case in point: linking cryptocurrency to cars, school fees, rental and phone bills.
The keynote address was presented by full-stack developer, and expert blockchain architect Lamar Wilson and was captioned, ‘Bitcoin Blockchain and Beyond’. Lamar spoke about the purpose of the Satoshi whitepaper which is essentially a blueprint for a system that helps you control your own finance – A trustless system that aids the transference of wealth. He also addressed issues facing adoption today with the people fighting against bitcoin essentially fighting to be the ones controlling it. In his impassioned speech, Lamar spoke about Networking as the future of blockchain; the number one thing in blockchain. He explained the need for more adoption to protect this awesome technology that is the blockchain and its attendant features even as the government tries to shut it down via unfair regulations. According to Lamar, Blockchain is a revolution and we all need to take sides by reducing fiat use and exercising our freedom to use this technology (blockchain) to do whatever we want.
The event was soon brought to a satisfying conclusion. Victor (our Cofounder) enjoyed networking with other attendees before and after the event and made several useful connections that will help further KuBitX goals.
In our quest to further create awareness for the revolutionary work will do here at KuBitX, we have other events lined up in the future and will keep you informed. Be sure to stay up to date via our social media handles and channels.
